Crazy Obscure Awesome-ness

This is a band that was at one point comprised of Neil Young and Rick James. Hard to believe but true. Apparently another memeber went on to help Young form Buffalo Springfield and some of the others went to Steppenwolf. They signed to Motown as but never released any singles due to Rick James trouble with the law. This song which I believe is one of the few Young and James co-written pieces is an amazing piece of R&B early rock n' roll history. In this picture below you can see the baby faced Young on the left and James of course center, they were both minors when this band existed. Amazing piece of rock history. The Mynah Birds!

They say you always go back to the music of your childhood. Well, as much as I used to not admit it, the only music I heard as a very young child was a Beach Boys tape I had and my grandma's 45s and a really bad 80s Neil Diamond. Anyways, the Beach Boys are so amazing. Here's a track most people don't no. After there big success, when they were considered very uncool. Great little song, great album, with the same name. Includes a Stevie Wonder cover.

This song was used in a truly moving hymn by Parliament on their first album. Another fine example of classical music sampling.

It's sped up....but you can tell it is the same progression. This song is truly moving. Hard to believe its the same Parliament. I truly recommend this whole album, their first called Osmium.

Staple Singers 1959 (My Best 78)

This 78 is absolutely amazing and I have a copy of it. Old gospel recording are just absolutely spectacular. You can really hear where soul music came from. Especially these very singers became huge soul singers when they switched to secular. Listening to this on original 78 on a phonograph and the other track, "I Got Religion" is what its all about. Trust me. It plays really well even though it has a huge crack from when my roomate tried to bring it to me in the pysch ward. It broke, but it was really rad of him to try and bring it, and it still plays amazingly even though the crack is huge. Lucky, because anyone who collects 78s knows they are way more brittle than vinyl.

Before I left Portland my roomate was getting me into calypso, which is a music genre I definitely had never explored. This song from the 90's is straight up Calypso, so crazy. I wish I had found a video for this song, but this was the best youtube had. Anyways, these guys were way ahead and behind the times. The 90's definitely had its assortment of gems. Like this....

So, this is the original gospel hit that the great Ray Charles would re-work (sample if you will) and make his own with I Got A Woman. Its an amazing piece of music and earliest examples of sampling. Gospel music which came from the south would give rise to rhythm and blues and then soul and rock n roll. In a sense, its like all of this great music came directly from gospel, directly from music singing praise of god. God gave rock n roll to us! And Ray Charles made it okay to do, even though it wasnt at the time. God Bless Ray Charles. Its amazing to me that it took a blind black man, to have the ability to have the strength to sing his heart out, but then again he couldnt see color. Neither could Little Stevie, coincidence...I think not. Another blessing.....

Beatles mania is being re-circulated again, with the re-issuing of their albums. Even I'm a little bit caught up in it. Wanted to post this first appearance by the mop tops, to show just how out of tune they were. Its amazing. Also, I hope everyone knows that the Beatles name is just a nod to Buddy Holly's Crickets. Of course....since the Crickets created the modern rock: two guitar, one bass, drummer format we know and love today.
