Really Good Portland Band!

Elvis' Sad Demise....

The King. At the bitter end. This video is really sad. You can really get a feel for Elvis' emptiness at the end of his life.....
MJ must have been in about the same place.

Ma and Pa Kettle Math

Fun video I saw today in Ed 531, which confused half the class. I feel like I would love to use this video for now and eternity when teaching math. Great opening video for teaching Basic Math. The problem with ma and pa in every example is a fundamental misconception about place value. They keep using a 1 as 1, when the value is actually 1 ten. Place value error. Its a math thing. this video is awesome though. Thanks Dr. Eiffler.

TOTAL BUMMER! Seeds lead singer dies and no one knows!!!!!!!

THE SEEDS

This truly reminds me of the day Darby decided to OD, the same day John Lennon was assassinated. Talk about becoming a footnote. Anywho the Seeds were totally amazing and the lead singer Sky Saxon apparently died the same day MJ kicked it. Here is a little tribute for those not aware of the awesome garage rock of the Seeds. (See Nugget collection)

The Toys - A Lover's Concerto

This song is referenced in Mr. Holland's Opus, which I watched today at U of P. Apparently its an early example of "sampling" in this case from Bach's classical song, basing the melody on the familiar "Minuet in G major" (BWV Anh. 114) from J.S. Bach's Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. One key difference is that the "Minuet in G major" is written in 3/4 time, whereas "A Lover's Concerto" is arranged in 4/4 time. Early Hip Hop or should I say Doo Wop????

Jermaine Jackson

I am convinced he off'd Michael, because they never got along, and MJ was racking up a huge debt for the family to adopt, as well as ruining their reputation as well. Also, every report read that Jermaine found him first going into cardiac arrest. I don't know, could be crazy. I just hope that there is finally some discussion about what is wrong with the world, where a black man would make his skin white. I think MJ was a big reflection of how America still treats African Americans. There is still big problems. Schools are still segregated, whether we want to admit it or not. See Kozol's "Shame of the Nation."

The Outsiders - TIme Won't Let Me

This song is my current obsession. I do not have it on 45. :(

The Extensions - I Want to Know

One of the best Northern Soul songs I've ever heard. Can't find this on youtube folks. Exclusively here from DJThinK, care of my roomate Steve. This goes for $35.00 on ebay. So, be thankful that you can download and enjoy here for free. This is one of ten records on Success records, which was based out of Des Moines, might be why this wasn't a success. Although, when I hear this, I think total hit!!!!

Ultimate 45 Collection for Sale

Now someone always challenges me when I say vinyl is pretty dead. Then again, I didn't take latin in high school and survived life so far.

Anyway, check this out in case you're interested in building a great vinyl collection at your library:

"The Ultimate Singles Record Collection consists of every – yes every – 45 RPM vinyl single record that was listed on the Billboard Top 100 rock and roll charts from 1955 to 1990. Thirty five years of plastic music glory (18,400 records in total), some autographed. It’s what we in the trade call an instant record collection. The one teeny, and we’re stressing tiny, problem here is the fact that you’ll need to cough up $275,000 for the complete set. And probably need to think about moving out of the one bedroom squat you’re living in right now. But hey, faint heart and all that…

To be clear, it contains each and every 45 RPM vinyl record that was listed on the Billboard Top 100 Rock and Pop charts from Jan. 1, 1955, through Dec. 31, 1990. Absolutely every disc for 35 years, every No. 100 up to every No. 1. There are some 18,400 records total. Some are even autographed. How about the Beatles’ 1964 hit “Ain’t She Sweet” with picture sleeve, worth a cool $500; or the Beach Boys’ 1961 hit “Surfin’ Luau” worth $200. There are literally hundreds of extremely collectible 45s — Elvis, Joplin, Hendrix, you name it — and the collection in its entirety is priceless."

I suppose this is the vinyl version of George Costanza's Dad, Frank's TV Guide collection.

Really Really Bad Cover by Two Live Crew

Do NOT WATCH THIS. It is offensively foul mouthed and pathetically amateur in every sense of the word. I wanted to put it up for contrast to these other two. I personally like the Exciters the best.

Manfred Mann version

For your comparison needs....

Exciters (Girl Group) - Do Wah Diddy

This is the original, covered and made a hit by Manfred Mann.

The Foundations.

Great song. By England's first interracial group, The Foundations. I know this is the original singer, but not sure how many of the members in the video are from The Foundations. Anywho... this song came up today at U of P.

Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me

Michael Jackson did the chorus of this song. I always thought it was a great track.

Simpsons/Micheal Jackson Episode

My roomate Tyler just brought up this episode from way back when, I barely remembered it. There was this weird Simpsons episode that had a white guy who was Michael Jackson who did this song for Lisa's birthday. This version actually had MJ singing on it.

RIP - Michael Jackson

This is the Jackson Five's first 45 on Steeltown, "Big Boy."
I wish I owned this before today, it is probably going to sky rocket in value.

Pogues Video w/ Kristy MacColl

This is an Anita O'Day track with some other track at the end. Anywho...I thought I had seen everything by the Pogues. But I guess I haven't. Also... the Pogues have a brand new box set on Rhino that is five CD's that is really awesome!

The Pleasure Seekers feat. Suzi Quattro

This is probably the first all girl band in garage rock. The predecessor to The Runaways. My roomate Steve has this single. The lyrics are totally off the hook. It mentions Stroh's Beer! Anyways....I think all these girls are under 18, so similar to The Runaways in that aspect. Pretty awesome. They were out of Detroit and apparently a great live act. Suzi Quattro for those who don't know went on to have a pretty big solo career with an all male backing band. All girl groups just didn't get any respect back in the day, and they still kinda don't. Its just a male dominated arena. Not cool.

Eric Burdon & the Animals and WAR

My new roomate Steve is from Lafeyette, LA. And is really big on Eric Burdon. I never fully understood how amazing this man's bands are. I am learning quick though. Check out this classis with WAR.

Student Teaching (Sept. 1st - Nov. 25)

This is where I will be doing my first stint as a middle school math teacher. Jackson Middle School.
Its a Leonard Bernstein School of Artful Learning. Sounds like it is going to be awesome. Makes me think about the REM song, "Its the End of the World as We Know It," where it goes, "Leo-Nard-Bern-Stein."
