What Im reading right now....

This book is really amazing. Ive been glued to it for about a week now. Im really beginning to learn about the cultural importance of gospel, rhythm & blues and soul. Although there is still great music out today, why is so much of it devoid of content, especially with commercial hip hop?

Squirrel Nut Zippers - HELL

I completely forgot about this song til I heard it the other day on KMFB 96.7. Man, it is just so amazing. Before I left Portland my roomate was getting me into calypso, which is a music genre I definitely had never explored. This song from the 90's is straight up Calypso, so crazy. I wish I had found a video for this song, but this was the best youtube had. Anyways, these guys were way ahead and behind the times. The 90's definitely had its assortment of gems. Like this....
Enjoy. I did.

MGMT-KIDS

Amazingly catchy song. Disturbingly Labyrinth-like video.

Kanye West/Jamie Foxx Reinterpret once again.....

The modern result of the following two posts. This is Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles' I Got a Woman's orginally It Must Be Jesus. To me this is evolution of music, this is music and DJ history and worthy of posting. As a disclaimer: Im not a big fan of this, but it is an interesting end product....

Ray Charles -I Got A Woman

It Must Be Jesus becomes I Got A Woman. The first gospel/rhythm and blues crossover. This is one of the songs that changed music.

It Must Be Jesus - Southern Tones

So, this is the original gospel hit that the great Ray Charles would re-work (sample if you will) and make his own with I Got A Woman. Its an amazing piece of music and earliest examples of sampling. Gospel music which came from the south would give rise to rhythm and blues and then soul and rock n roll. In a sense, its like all of this great music came directly from gospel, directly from music singing praise of god. God gave rock n roll to us! And Ray Charles made it okay to do, even though it wasnt at the time. God Bless Ray Charles. Its amazing to me that it took a blind black man, to have the ability to have the strength to sing his heart out, but then again he couldnt see color. Neither could Little Stevie, coincidence...I think not. Another blessing.....

Herbie Hancock sampled by 90's band Us3

Anyone remember this....
Nowadays anyone could have taken this bit from Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island and looped it making Cantaloop by Us3, but in the 90s it was unheard of greatness. Funny....

Cher - Dark Lady

Id never heard this til it came on the radio station KMFB 96.7 the other day. Pretty awesome song for Cher....
Well, I think so.

Left Banke - Pretty Ballerina

Don't ask whats up with this poor youtube video it was the best version of the song i could find audio wise that wasn't disabled.
Anyways....beautiful 1967 hit by the Left Banke. I need to find this 45. It almost sounds like it could be 80's or 60's. Weird. Very striking baroque melodies. I think much better than their other hit "Walk Away Renee" covered by Four Tops.

Suzanne Lyrics by Leonard Cohen

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.
